Pension Reform Bills Draw Support From Tallman

HARRISBURG – Two pieces of much-needed pension reform legislation have passed the state House, according to state Rep. Will Tallman (R-Adams/Cumberland), who authored one of them and voted for both.
“Pension reform is important because it impacts Pennsylvania’s fiscal health in so many ways, from the state’s bond rating to homeowners’ property taxes,” Tallman said. “I’m glad to see movement on these bills as part of our economic turnaround.”

Senate Bill 1, legislation that would affect future state and public school employees hired starting in 2019 but not those who currently participate in PSERS (Public School Employees Retirement System) and SERS (State Employee retirement System).
“Senate Bill 1 would result in significant savings for taxpayers, honor the promises made to retirees and current state employees and offer future participants in PSERS and SERS competitive retirement plan choices that they – not an administrator – will control,” added Tallman. “At the same time, we are doing away with a retirement vehicle (the 100 percent defined benefit retirement option) that threatens solvency and is simply unsustainable. The bill doesn’t confront the unfunded liability but is a step that must be taken. Doing nothing is not a viable course of action here.”

House Bill 922, passed on a predominately party-line vote Tuesday night.
“It’s simple – employees of the Susquehanna River Basin Commission (SRBC) are not state employees and should not be participating in SERS,” he added. “Their being part of our public pension system is an additional cost our taxpayers should not be forced to bear. My bill prevents future SRBC hires from enrolling in SERS.”
House Bill 922 now sits with the state Senate.
