Pickett Seeks to Empower Consumers with House Insurance Assignment
HARRISBURG – Coming off a successful House session where she authored two important pieces of insurance legislation into law, Rep. Tina Pickett (R-Bradford/Sullivan/Susquehanna) was selected this week to continue her service as chairman of the
House Insurance Committee during the 2017-18 session.
The appointment was announced by Speaker of the House Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny).
“Chairing the House Insurance Committee is a tremendous responsibility and privilege I take very seriously,” Pickett said. “Insurance encompasses so many facets of our lives – from cradle to grave – and its complex nature can lead to confusion among consumers. Our committee will help oversee the Insurance Department and ensure any legislation running through the House that pertains to insurance matters is studied with extreme care.”
During the most recent legislative session, Pickett authored two insurance bills that seek to help families and consumers.
Act 84 of 2015 extended the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) for two more years while transferring the initiative to the Department of Human Services for better coordination of care and cost-savings.
Act 30 of 2015 gives life insurance companies the option to send policies and annuities to their customers electronically, if so chosen by the consumer.
Additionally, she has worked with the Pennsylvania Insurance Department on ways in which beneficiaries can better find information about life insurance policies. During the upcoming session, Pickett and the committee will examine legislation that will ensure insurance regulations are fairly enforced while being mindful of the consumer. The committee will also look closely at any changes made by the federal government with respect to ObamaCare and those potential changes on the state.
Prior to serving in the lead role for the Insurance Committee, Pickett chaired the House Gaming Oversight Committee, and during her tenure, was a member of several leading House committees including Transportation, Consumer Affairs, Transportation, Agriculture and Rural Affairs, among others. She has served the 110th District since 2001.
