HARRISBURG – To address Pennsylvania’s ongoing opioid addiction crisis, Gov. Tom Wolf signed into law
House Bill 1699, which was sponsored by Rep. Rosemary M. Brown (R-Monroe/Pike). Brown’s legislation, now Act 122, will take effect in 60 days.
“Today was a good day for the Commonwealth, as five good pieces of legislation were signed into law,” Brown said. “It has been estimated that 5 million Americans are abusing prescription opioid pain relievers, which is leading to tragic consequences. I am proud that this bill has made it over the goal line, and I am hopeful this new law will help to prevent future addictions. A lot more work is necessary to address this public health crisis, and we will continue to work on solutions.”
Act 122 mandates that hospital emergency departments and urgent care centers may not prescribe opioids in quantities that last more than seven days and they may not write refills for opioid prescriptions.
“Emergency rooms are not where long-term medical relationships between doctors and patients should be established with highly dangerous drugs, such as opioids,” Brown said. “We need to be doing all we can to prevent addiction, and keep excessive pills off the streets.”
