Bill to Renew ‘PA One Call’ Headed to Governor, Godshall Says
HARRISBURG – Tonight, a bill to reauthorize the law protecting underground utility infrastructure and citizens from line hits during excavation projects is on its way to the governor, said Rep. Robert Godshall (R-Montgomery), whose House Consumer Affairs Committee amended the bill last week.
Senate Bill 1235 reauthorizes Act 287 of 1974, commonly known as the PA One Call law, which would expire at midnight on Dec. 31, unless reauthorized by the General Assembly and signed into law. The amendment made the bill identical to one Godshall is sponsoring to require work sites to be properly marked before excavation begins.
“This law is necessary to ensure the safety of excavators and property owners, and to minimize damage to underground lines,” said Godshall. “It would extend the PA One Call law for one year, to give legislators and stakeholders time to take a comprehensive look at recent issues that have been raised concerning parts of the 42-year-old law and to work out any changes that may be necessary.”
