House Approves Cutler’s Bill to Name Local Bridge for Fallen Soldier
HARRISBURG – Today the House approved legislation with unanimous support sponsored by Rep. Bryan Cutler (R-Peach Bottom) to recognize Cpl. Eric M. Torbert Jr., a local soldier who lost his life serving our country in Afghanistan in 2010.
The 2003 Penn Manor High School graduate was a combat engineer of the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Camp Pendleton, Calif. Torbert was honored with the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
“It was a tragedy to lose the young soldier who was recently married. Not remembering his spirit and ultimate sacrifice for all of us would be an even greater tragedy,” Cutler said. “I look forward to the day when everyone who travels his bridge will be reminded of his fight for the ideals we as Americans hold dear.”
House Bill 2293 would designate the bridge over the Conestoga River on a portion of State Route 741, between Pequea Township and Lancaster Township as the Cpl. Eric M. Torbert Jr. Memorial Bridge. As an avid outdoorsman with a special penchant for fishing, Torbert frequented the location his family chose to honor him.
The bill now advances to the Senate for consideration.
