White Bill to Honor Battalion Chief Goodwin Signed Into Law
HARRISBURG-- Legislation sponsored by Rep. Martina White (R-Philadelphia) to honor the sacrifice of fallen firefighter Battalion Chief Michael R. Goodwin Sr. by renaming a local road in his honor has been signed into law by Gov. Tom Wolf.
House Bill 1787 renames a portion of Academy Road from Byberry Road to Nanton Drive in Philadelphia as the Michael R. Goodwin Sr. Memorial Highway.
“Chief Goodwin represented the greatest qualities of our firefighters, including bravery and dedication,” White said. “Everyone who pledges to serve understands that on any day they may not come home. Yet, they forge ahead to protect us. We must always remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice like Michael R. Goodwin Sr.”
On April 6, 2013, Goodwin, who lived in Parkwood, answered a call to a factory fire when a floor collapsed trapping Goodwin inside the inferno. Prior to his death, Goodwin was on the list to be promoted to the rank of battalion chief; he received the promotion posthumously.
“When Philadelphians pass by that road and see that sign they will remember the sacrifice Chief Goodwin made that day,” White said. “In a bigger way, they will understand the gallantry of those special men and women who place their lives on the line for the safety of others.”
The new law takes effect 60 days after the governor’s signature.
