Cooper: Budget Plan Fails to Prioritize
HARRISBURG – Rep. Jill Cooper (R-Westmoreland) issued the following statement regarding the passage of
House Bill 1330, which contains a $50.6 billion budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year:
“The budget plan put forth by House Democrats is fiscal irresponsibility at its finest as the overall spend far outpaces the Commonwealth’s projected revenue by about $5 billion. This $50.6 billion spending proposal is a 5.8% increase from the prior year and outspends what Pennsylvania’s families and businesses can afford.
“There are certainly core services and functions of state government that we must adequately fund, including transportation, education, public safety, and services for seniors. But responsible budgeting is about prioritizing and with better fiscal management, we can make certain these services are functioning as they should.
“It’s equally important to note that this budget plan was only shared by House Democrat leaders just this morning, five minutes before a vote in the House Appropriations Committee. Poor fiscal decisions can create deficits in the future, and I am not about to support a budget that I have not had adequate time to review.
“Pennsylvania families are forced to make tough choices, comparing their incomes to their expenses, separating their needs from wants and making decisions accordingly. Harrisburg needs to do the same thing, and the spending proposal moved today simply doesn’t do that.”
