Lifetime Hunting License Holders Exempt from Pheasant Permit, Cutler Says
HARRISBURG – Rep. Bryan Cutler (R-Peach Bottom) commends the Pennsylvania Game Commission for reversing its decision requiring all hunters, including those with lifetime resident hunting licenses, to purchase a permit to hunt pheasants. The decision is in accordance with an amendment he drafted for a bill passed by the House in March.
“I thank the commission for responding to the legislation even before it became law,” Cutler said. “It’s important that hunters receive all of the benefits for which they paid when they purchased their lifetime licenses, rather than whittling away at the offerings of those licenses. The commission’s reversal treats our hunters more fairly.”
All hunters who had their lifetime license prior to May 13, 2017, will not need to purchase a separate pheasant permit. Adult pheasant hunters still will need to purchase the $26.90 permit and junior pheasant hunters will need to obtain a free permit in 2018-19.
“Because the commission reversed its decision now instead of waiting for the legislation to become law, hunters will be able to save money this year when licenses go on sale next month – rather than having to wait for that savings to materialize next year,” Cutler added.
The legislation that Cutler amended,
House Bill 1409, authored by Rep. Parke Wentling (R-Crawford/Erie/Lawrence/Mercer), would provide licensing discounts and exemptions for nonresident, disabled veterans and former prisoners of war. It would also exempt senior lifetime hunting and furtaking license holders from any permits required to hunt game animals previously allowed under their lifetime licenses.
As the bill passed the House unanimously, it is currently being considered by the Senate.
