Benninghoff Resolution Urging Congress to End ‘Spoofing’ Passes PA House Unanimously
6/20/2019
HARRISBURG – The House of Representatives today unanimously passed House Resolution 250, sponsored by Rep. Kerry Benninghoff (R-Centre/Mifflin), urging the Congress of the United States to take immediate action to end spoofing.

“Spoofing needs to be swiftly and aggressively addressed,” Benninghoff said. “Despite being illegal, these unwanted robocalls that appear to originate from local, often legitimate, numbers in order to trick consumers, are on the rise.”

Specifically, the resolution calls on Congress to grant additional authority to the Federal Communications Commission to allow it to stop unwanted robocalls and spoofing, and to educate the public about how to report illegal calls.

“Good people are being harassed and defrauded every single day. More needs to be done to protect Pennsylvanians.”

State officials are unable to address this problem without action from Congress, as the authority to make significant changes lies solely within the federal government.

“The federal government has taken a few steps to address this issue, but clearly, more needs to be done,” Benninghoff said. “Our phones are ringing off the hook. Every day, and several times a day, our seniors and neighbors are being bombarded by people who are attempting to steal their hard-earned money and personal information.”

“I urge Congress to act now, and thank my colleagues for their bipartisan support on this important issue.”
