Brooks’ Resolution Recognizes Oct. 5 as Anti-Bullying Awareness Day in PA
10/1/2020
HARRISBURG – A resolution sponsored by Rep. Bob Brooks (R-Allegheny/Westmoreland), which designates Oct 5 as Anti-Bullying Awareness Day in Pennsylvania, passed the House unanimously today.

“Bullying seems to be everywhere,” said Brooks. “They hide behind the Internet to taunt kids by text message, with Facebook and Twitter posts, Snapchat videos and Instagram photos. Kids cannot escape the torment because they are bombarded with it around the clock. In many cases, they are facing not just hurtful lies but sometimes even threats. Sadly, bullying is now a part of our children’s reality.”

Brooks added that studies show that bullying can have long-lasting psychological effects on a victim, including poor school adjustment, sleep difficulties, anxiety and depression. Students who engage in bullying behavior are at increased risks for academic problems, substance use, and violent behavior later in life.

House Resolution 793 seeks to make everyone aware of the problems surrounding bullying and encourages everyone to take an active role in bullying prevention in their local communities.

“Children should be able to learn in an environment where they feel safe and comfortable,” said Brooks. “Victims of bullying in our schools are often deprived of the opportunity to enjoy education and learning. Adults involved in the learning process owe it to our students to be more organized and vigilant in our efforts to provide them with a positive and safe learning environment.

“We must encourage schools, communities and organizations to work together to stop bullying and put an end to hatred by increasing awareness of the prevalence and impact of all forms of bullying on children of all ages,” he concluded.
