Culver: Governor Puts Forward His 2016-17 Budget Proposal
Lawmaker comments on Gov. Tom Wolf’s new budget plan
HARRISBURG – On Tuesday, the House and Senate convened for a joint session of the Pennsylvania General Assembly to hear Gov. Tom Wolf’s budget address for the second year of his administration. The governor signed the current year’s budget on Dec. 29, 2015, but line-item vetoed $6.3 billion, making the budget only 87 percent complete. Rep. Lynda Schlegel Culver (R-Northumberland/Snyder) made the following statement after the address:
“Even though today Gov. Wolf gave his budget address, this year is unique because the governor has yet to complete the current year’s budget plan, which he partially signed back in December. It is perplexing that after such a vocal negative response to increased taxes and spending from Pennsylvania citizens, the governor is yet again proposing large and widespread tax increases on the hard-working people of the Commonwealth. Pennsylvanians couldn’t afford it last year, and they still can’t afford it now. His proposal today calls for a retroactive Personal Income Tax increase of 11 percent from Pennsylvania’s working families.
“As with every budget proposal by a governor, the plan he released today is an outline that will begin the budget hearings and negotiation process. Overall, I am hopeful that this year our governor understands that this is not about partisan politics but about representing the views of the constituents who elected us to do our jobs. We have checks and balances in our state’s budget-crafting process for a reason. To achieve a responsible budget for the people of Pennsylvania, the governor and the Legislature must all work together.”
