Reed Accepts Award from the Community Action Association of Pennsylvania
4/9/2014
HARRISBURG – Rep. Dave Reed (R-Indiana) tonight accepted the Community Action Association of Pennsylvania’s (CAAP) Public Official of the Year Award at the organization’s annual conference. Reed is the chairman of the House Majority Policy Committee. Since last July, the committee has examined poverty across Pennsylvania through discussions with community groups, roundtable discussions, tours of nonprofits and hearings as part of the initiative, “Empowering Opportunities: Gateways Out of Poverty.”

CAAP is a statewide membership organization which represents 43 Community Action agencies across the Commonwealth, including the Indiana County Community Action Program. CAAP and its member agencies work to address the needs of low-income people in order to help them attain self-sufficiency.

“This is an organization which has been essential in our hearings, by giving legislators a glimpse of the struggles across the state, both in urban and rural areas,” Reed said. “It is an honor to be given this award and the conference was a great opportunity to share my experiences from our visits across the state with the folks attending this event.”

“Representative Reed has shown great commitment to addressing the plight of poverty in Pennsylvania,” said CAAP representative Joe Ostrander. “Our organization and membership are pleased to recognize his leadership in making poverty a priority issue by presenting our Public Official of the Year award. We look forward to continuing to work with him and the legislature on modern-day solutions to assist the 1.6 million Pennsylvanians who are living in poverty.”

Reed also authored House Resolution 753, which designates May 2014 as “Community Action Month” in Pennsylvania. That resolution passed unanimously in the House this week.
