HARRISBURG – Rep. Matthew Dowling (R-Fayette/Somerset) today released the following statement after the House voted to send its version of the state budget to the Senate:
“Over the past several years, House Republicans have made a commitment to work within the current revenue and not increase broad-based taxes. This year’s budget is no exception. Our fiscal restraint has put Pennsylvania on the path to better protect taxpayers now and in the future, and that’s what I came to Harrisburg to accomplish.
“Despite Gov. Wolf’s claim that our state economy would be in shambles if we didn’t raise taxes, we are actually able to set aside money for the state’s Rainy Day Fund for the second fiscal year in a row. I am also pleased this budget includes no state police assessment fees on our struggling rural municipalities.
“The budget raises the cap for the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program donations by $25 million. While this will help thousands of low-income students, it falls well short of the demand for the program as nearly 50,000 students are turned away every year. Unfortunately, the governor recently vetoed legislation passed by both the House and Senate which would have increased the EITC cap by $100 million and included an escalator for future years. I am disappointed that instead of meeting halfway, this budget ignores families in need by raising the cap by the same amount as last year’s budget deal.”
