HARRISBURG – Rep. Ryan Warner (R-Fayette/Westmoreland) issued the following statement in response to Gov. Tom Wolf’s announcement that he plans to issue bonds to help pay for new voting machines without approval of the Legislature:
“As a duly elected member of the General Assembly, I am deeply concerned by this pattern of behavior by the governor. We all learn in school about the separate but equal branches of government and separation of powers, but I’m wondering if the governor was out that day.
“First, he unilaterally announces he will ‘decertify’ every single voting machine used in the Commonwealth and require them all to be replaced by the 2020 election. Then, appearing to acknowledge he needs legislative approval to provide funding, the governor pushes the General Assembly to help pay the $150 million price tag throughout budget negotiations. Then, when he doesn’t like the other election reforms that go along with the funding we approve, he vetoes the bill and decides he can unilaterally spend the money on his own.
“This is no way for the state’s chief executive to act. It is disrespectful to the taxpayers and to members of the General Assembly who work hard to represent the interests of their constituents and communities. The governor needs to respect the legislative process and respect the Constitution. And if he fails to do so, there must be consequences.”
