MEDIA – Rep. Chris Quinn (R-Delaware) commended the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) for fining Sunoco Pipeline, LP more than $300,000 for unauthorized discharges of drilling fluids throughout the state including into Chester Creek and other wetlands in Middletown Township.
“These discharges can harm our environment, and they continue due to negligence on behalf of Sunoco,” said Quinn. “My top priority as a state representative is to ensure the safety and welfare of my constituents, and the fact that waterways in my district are being damaged is highly unacceptable.”
Quinn said that while the fines are appropriate, they are reactive and not proactive.
“It is clear that continued fines are not deterring Sunoco, and something has to be done to change their behavior,” said Quinn. “We need to take measures that will ensure that these discharges and other inappropriate activities are not occurring in the first place. DEP needs enforcement mechanisms that are preventative in nature.”
Quinn stated that construction of Mariner East 2 should be halted until drilling techniques can be re-evaluated to prevent these unauthorized discharges in the future.
