HARRISBURG – Rep. John Hershey (R-Mifflin/Juniata/Franklin) has been named to the Pennsylvania Dairy Future Commission, where he joins commission Chairman Brett Reinford from Reinford Farms in Mifflintown.
House Speaker Mike Turzai named Hershey to the new commission that is focused on reviewing dairy processing production and marketing, current issues facing the industry, and regulations and government impacts.
The commission will develop a report of findings and recommendations for the industry within one year.
“I thank Speaker Turzai for trusting me to take on this role. I’m happy I can join both Brett Reinford as well as Dina Zug from Mifflintown’s Zugstead Farms on this commission. The dairy industry is facing a number of challenges, and I want to help it in any way that I can,” Hershey said.
The three counties in the 82nd District are all in the top 20 when Pennsylvania’s dairy production is ranked by county.
Hershey said he is honored to be one of two legislators on the commission. He is joined by Sen. Judy Ward (R-Blair/Cumberland/Franklin/Fulton/Huntingdon).
Act 66 of 2019 established the Dairy Future Commission.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, the Commonwealth has nearly 520,000 cows that produce more than 10.6 billion pounds of milk each year. The state ranks seventh nationally in total milk production.
