HARRISBURG – Rep. Tedd Nesbit (R-Mercer/Butler) said today he is excited that his committee assignments for the 2017-18 legislative session will include a return to the active House Judiciary Committee, which deals with many crime- and civil-related issues of state government.
“As a member of the Judiciary Committee last term, we held a number of hearings and meetings regarding a wide range of issues, including public safety, child sexual abuse, law enforcement and criminal justice,” said Nesbit, who uses his experience in both the criminal and civil justice sides as a member of the committee. “We have been one of the busiest committees in the House, with more than 440 bills and resolutions being referred to us – more than any other standing committee – and we acted upon more than 100 of them as a way to help make our communities safer.”
In addition to considering legislation, the House Judiciary Committee also has certain legislative oversight responsibilities for various executive departments.
Among Nesbit’s other assignments are a return to the House Children and Youth and Gaming Oversight committees. The Children and Youth Committee is focused on child protection and child welfare issues, juvenile delinquency, adolescent and teen problems, and adoption and foster care; and the Gaming Oversight Committee oversees legislation dealing with slot machines and table games, as well as the state’s bingo, small games of chance and amusement laws.
Last session, Nesbit worked on legislation that would update the state’s adoption laws so that children in need are better able to find loving homes, and improvements to the Child Protective Services Law to ensure children are in safe homes.
New to his roster this session is an assignment on the House Insurance Committee, which helps oversee the Insurance Department and ensure any legislation running through the House that pertains to insurance matters is studied with extreme care.
During the upcoming session, the committee will examine legislation that will ensure insurance regulations are fairly enforced while being mindful of the consumer. The committee will also look closely at any changes made by the federal government with respect to ObamaCare and those potential changes on the state.
“I’m excited about this diverse assignment of committees, as it allows me and the 8th District to have a direct impact on the legislation being considered,” Nesbit said.
