HARRISBURG – Rep. Jason Ortitay (R-Washington/Allegheny) today re-introduced legislation to gradually reduce Pennsylvania’s Corporate Net Income Tax (CNIT) rate to make the state more business friendly.

“Earlier this month, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the governor told the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Philadelphia that he has cut the corporate tax rate,” Ortitay said. “Since this legislation was first introduced in January 2016, he made no attempt to reduce the CNIT. I am calling on the governor to live up to his recent words and support this legislation to move our state out of one of the top spots in regards to the corporate tax rate.”

The Commonwealth currently has the second highest CNIT in the nation at 9.99 percent. House Bill 130 would reduce the CNIT over a five-year period to a much more competitive 4.99 percent. The reduction would take place at a rate of 1 percentage point per year.

“Pennsylvania needs to be more competitive so that we can attract more businesses, which creates more jobs,” Ortitay added. “In addition, reducing the CNIT allows businesses already in the state to use that money to hire additional employees. I’ve spoken to many businesses in my district about this topic, and when asked about what they would do if they had to pay fewer taxes, the No. 1 response was to hire more employees.”

At the time of its introduction, the legislation had already received bipartisan support in the House with 29 co-sponsors.

The 46th Legislative District includes Collier and South Fayette townships and Bridgeville, Heidelberg, McDonald and Oakdale boroughs in Allegheny County. It also encompasses Canton, Cecil, Mt. Pleasant, Robinson and Smith townships and Burgettstown, McDonald and Midway boroughs in Washington County.
