LOWER BURRELL – State Rep. Eli Evankovich (R-Westmoreland/Allegheny) announced today that he will not seek re-election for a fifth term in the General Assembly.

Evankovich, a former Financial Analyst for United States Steel Corporation who was first elected in 2010, made the following statement:

“It has truly been an honor to serve in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives on behalf of the people of the 54th district in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties. When I was first running for office in 2010, I made a commitment to the voters that I did not intend to serve a life-long career in public office. My personal mission was to do my part in making government more efficient and to help to change the dynamic in government by using some of my private sector experience.

“While I am proud of what I was able to accomplish during my tenure, getting things done in government is the ultimate team sport. I am grateful for everyone who has helped me succeed in making change along the way. I am also proud of the issues, large and small, that I stood shoulder-to-shoulder with others to help resolve.

“From manufacturing to law enforcement, health care to sexual assault, and infrastructure to energy, every issue I have had an opportunity to address throughout my career has been important to me. Perhaps the most fulfilling experience has been the opportunity to help the people who walked into my office that just needed the government to work for them for a change.

“Holding office has a way of making you always want to do more: when one issue is resolved, another will always cross your desk that begs for the same resolution which in turn means another term.

“When my career in public service would end has been a decision I have thought about since the moment that I knocked on my first door nearly seven years ago. I have no shortage of personal desire or motivation to keep serving as a lawmaker to make our state a better place. However, this decision became much less complex last summer in a very unexpected way.

“Earlier this year, I was in a bad motorcycle accident, and thanks to God and superb medical care, I made a full recovery. It was, however, a life event that could have very easily gone in a much different direction, and it is what brought me to this very tough decision.

“Serving my constituents and the Commonwealth has been, and will continue to be, one of the greatest honors of my life.

“For my time remaining in public office, I will continue to work diligently towards the policies upon which I campaigned and defined my tenure over the past six years: government reform, private sector job growth and fiscal responsibility.”
