HARRISBURG– State Rep. Kerry Benninghoff (R-Centre/Mifflin) today was re-elected by his peers in the House Republican Caucus to serve a second term as chairman of the House Majority Policy Committee for the upcoming 2017-18 session.
“I was honored and humbled a week ago to have the continued support of the hard-working people in the 171st Legislative District,” Benninghoff said. “Today, I am once again honored and humbled to have the continued backing of my peers in Harrisburg.”
The House Majority Policy Committee travels the state conducting legislative hearings on important issues in order to develop sound policies for the benefit of all Pennsylvanians. The Policy Committee chairmanship is one of a number of leadership positions which are decided by a vote of the caucus. Benninghoff was first selected as the House Majority Policy Committee chairman by his colleagues in November 2014.
Over the last two years, under Benninghoff’s leadership, the Policy Committee held several hearings across the state as part of a “Business and Jobs Tour” to hear directly from small business owners about how the governor’s tax increase proposals would negatively impact working Pennsylvanians. Most recently, the committee concluded a series of statewide hearings on Pennsylvania’s deadly opioid epidemic in order to prepare legislative solutions for a special session on the topic.
“I am proud of the work we have done, but am also eager to continue tackling the many challenges facing our Commonwealth,” Benninghoff said. “We have a strong leadership team in place and I look forward to working with my colleagues to identify and develop commonsense solutions to those challenges.”
The House Republican Caucus today also elected its majority leader, whip, Appropriations Committee chairman and other leadership positions. Before being elected as House Majority Policy Committee chairman, Benninghoff served as chairman of the House Majority Finance Committee, which oversees matters relating to taxation and fiscal policy, investment of the Commonwealth’s money and regulations of the Department of Revenue.
