HARRISBURG – Rep. Tom Quigley (R-Montgomery) joined other members of the House of Representatives and Senate for Gov. Tom Wolf’s address regarding the Commonwealth’s opioid epidemic. The governor called on the Legislature to send bills fighting addiction to his desk before the close of the 2015-16 legislative session.

“It is with the bipartisan spirit demonstrated by the General Assembly and Gov. Wolf today that fueled our attack on the opioid epidemic. With the support of both chambers and the governor, important laws – such as the one that grants police departments access to the opioid overdose reversal antidote naloxone – are saving lives,” Quigley said. “I thank Gov. Wolf for his commitment to ending this epidemic.”

An additional $20 million for treatment of people who are addicted was included in the budget, creating 45 treatment centers and allowing 11,000 Pennsylvanians to receive care. Still, with 3,500 citizens of the Commonwealth losing their lives as a result of addiction in 2015 alone, more work remains.

“With the most Republican legislature in modern history and a Democratic governor, we’ve balanced the budget, we’ve increased education funding, we’ve passed a fair funding formula, we’ve brought medical marijuana to suffering kids, and we’ve reformed the liquor system,” Wolf said. “The magnitude of the opioid crisis threatens to cast a shadow over all of these important accomplishments and everything else we work to achieve in this building. But it is also a calling to use our time and our energy to fix a problem touching too many Pennsylvanians.”
