HARRISBURG – Legislative language drafted by Rep. Bryan Cutler (R-Peach Bottom) to salute a 2003 Penn Manor High School graduate who was killed in the line of duty while serving in Afghanistan was passed unanimously by the House Transportation Committee this week.
House Bill 2293 would designate the bridge over the Conestoga River on a portion of State Route 741, between Pequea Township and Lancaster Township as the Cpl. Eric M. Torbert Jr. Memorial Bridge. Torbert’s family chose the location because he enjoyed fishing there.
“Eric’s family reached out to me and are ready to honor him in this way. It is important to recognize the men and women who fight to preserve our freedom, and I look forward to the support of my colleagues as the bill advances,” Cutler said.
Torbert was a combat engineer of the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Camp Pendleton, Calif., who left for his first combat deployment in November 2010 following his wedding to Marcelle Torbert that year.
For his years of service in the Marines, Torbert was honored with the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
The bill now advances to the full House for consideration.
