HARRISBURG – Rep. Curt Sonney (R-Erie) has been re-elected to the executive committee of the bi-national, nonpartisan Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Legislative Caucus (GLLC) for 2021-22.
“I am honored to once again be selected to represent Pennsylvania as part of the GLLC,” said Sonney. “The Great Lakes are a treasure, and we must do all we can to protect them. I enjoy working with legislators from other states and Canada to improve environmental conditions throughout the Great Lakes region.”
Sonney has been a member of GLLC since 2013. The caucus is comprised of all eight states and two Canadian provinces in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence basin. Sonney represents Pennsylvania.
Looking ahead, Sonney said the policy agenda undertaken by GLLC in Erie will continue to focus on water consumption, aquatic invasive species, toxic substances, nutrient pollution and coastal communities. Some specific objectives include assuring the availability of safe, clean drinking water; reducing nutrient runoff; and supporting sustainable economic development of Great Lakes and St. Lawrence coastal communities, including the restoration and preservation of habitat.
The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River region contains 20% of the Earth’s surface fresh water and provides drinking water to more than 40 million U.S. and Canadian residents. It is also home of the third largest regional economy in the world.
