HARRISBURG – Rep. Jason Silvis (R-Westmoreland/Armstrong/Indiana) today issued the following statement in response to Gov. Tom Wolf’s $40.2 billion budget proposal for fiscal year 2021-22:
“I’m shocked that the governor would propose to increase the Personal Income Tax by 46% to 4.49%. This tax is paid not only by individuals but also by our small businesses. Hasn’t the governor done enough to hurt our small businesses over the past year? From shutting them down with little notice to constantly changing the rules, we should be removing barriers not making it harder.
“I want to assure my constituents that I will strongly oppose an increase in the Personal Income Tax. We should be cutting taxes to get our economy moving again – not increasing them. It appears the governor is living in a fantasy land. As a former small business owner, he should understand the working person’s plight.
“Furthermore, while I support educating our children, it is not feasible to increase preK-12 education almost $2 billion for the coming fiscal year. With schools barely open for the past 12 months and districts receiving additional federal CARES Act money, some savings should have been realized. Over the past 10 years, the state has increased education funding by more than $3.6 billion. We have never shortchanged education.”
