HARRISBURG – Rep. Judy Ward (R-Blair) voted against a $31.55 billion budget proposal for the 2016-17 fiscal year that would spend nearly 5 percent more than the current fiscal year.
Ward issued the following statement after the budget vote:
“This budget, while a bipartisan effort, does not curtail spending enough for me to feel comfortable supporting it. The increased spending relies on funding from revenues from gaming, tax amnesty and tobacco taxes that I think are overestimated.
“Just as last year, I think we need to be more conservative as a state and reduce spending amounts through smarter use of available money and strategies to reduce waste and redundancies. We can and should do better by the people we represent.
“It is my hope that as we continue to work through the budget process over the coming days with the Senate and the governor, that we will make substantial improvements to the current plan. I owe it to the people of the 80th Legislative District to do the best job I can as one of the trustees of the tax money they send to Harrisburg.”
Senate Bill 1073 passed the House by a vote of 132-68. It now goes to the Senate for consideration of House amendments.
