HARRISBURG – On Tuesday, Rep. Aaron Kaufer (R-Luzerne) joined the majority of his House colleagues in voting in favor of a budget plan for fiscal year 2016-17. The budget funds government’s core services, while providing historic investments in our schools, and not increasing or creating new broad-based taxes. After the vote, Kaufer made the following statement.
“On Tuesday, I joined with my Luzerne County House colleagues in supporting a bipartisan budget plan. I voted favorably for several reasons, most notably because I was glad we were able to pass a budget without broad-based tax increases. A historic investment in our schools, with $250 million in new funding going to pre-K-12, is included in this plan. Another highlight is that this budget plan would make our actuarial required contribution for the Public School Employees Retirement System (PSERS), thereby helping to improve our state’s pension solvency. And last but certainly not least, this plan would dedicate $15 million to fund programs and services related to Pennsylvania’s opioid addiction epidemic. As a chairman of the PA Heroin, Opioid Prevention and Education (PA-HOPE) Caucus, this issue is of vital importance to me, and I am glad to see this funding go toward combatting this epidemic.”
