HARRISBURG – Legislation sponsored by Rep. Seth Grove (R-York) to help enhance public safety was approved by the House of Representatives today.
House Bill 176 would create two programs to provide grants to eligible police departments across the Commonwealth to defray costs for: vehicle purchases, camera purchases, speed timing devices, domestic violence threat assessment training, personnel costs and community law enforcement efforts. The legislation would also make money available for grants to all law enforcement agencies to assist in providing training and equipment to officers to respond to drug overdoses.
These two grant programs will be funded by the remaining money available from the Local Law Enforcement Grant Program, which is administered by the Gaming Control Board to assist law enforcement agencies with enforcing state gaming law. A February audit from state Auditor General Eugene DePasquale reported that the Gaming Control Board only awarded 25 percent of the $4 million eligible to be awarded to law enforcement agencies between 2013-2015.
“My legislation would ensure that needed funds to help support our local law enforcement officials would be driven out to help address critical public safety issues, including the scourge of heroin addiction which impacts our communities. As the auditor general’s report noted, between 2013-2015, nearly $3 million that was meant to support law enforcement was unused and I believe that repurposing these funds for further use on these critical issues is the fiscally responsible decision that will benefit our communities,” said Grove.
The legislation will now be considered by the Senate.
