HARRISBURG – Rep. Stan Saylor (R-York) applauded the $60 million grant funding for school funding safety as part of the 2018-19 budget package.
Part of the grant funding will come as a result of a court case that ruled former Gov. Tom Corbett’s veto of General Assembly funding in the 2014-15 budget was unconstitutional. The House, Senate and administration each will put in $15 million, and an additional $15 million in court fees will be redirected to the fund. Senate Bill 1142 was amended in the House Appropriations Committee to set up this new grant program.
“Every child in Pennsylvania deserves to receive an education in a safe and secure environment,” said Saylor. “Too many times we have seen horrible tragedies occur throughout this country. We need to ensure that our schools have the resources necessary to protect our kids. The amendment I offered to Senate Bill 1142 in the Appropriations Committee helps set up a program to give our schools those needed resources.
“School safety funding has been a top priority for me. By passing this legislation, we will be giving schools throughout Pennsylvania the opportunity to apply for funding for critical safety items such as cameras, safety assessments, metal detectors, school resource officers and other critical resources. We want to give schools throughout Pennsylvania flexibility with this funding, realizing that each school’s needs are different.”
