HARRISBURG – To help keep schools open and officially end the nine-month state budget stalemate, Rep. Sheryl Delozier (R-Cumberland) today voted to send the remaining portion of the 2015-16 state budget to the governor’s desk.
House Bill 1801 restores cuts made by Gov. Tom Wolf when he signed the majority of the current budget into law in December.
“Our school children and our citizens deserve the right to move on from this mess. They are tired of being victims of government gridlock. I implore Gov. Wolf to put his personal priorities aside and help us to close the book on the 2015-16 budget year, so we can begin to move forward with next year’s budget.”
The $30 billion budget sent to the governor increases basic education funding by $200 million and restores Wolf’s vetoes to state funding for agriculture, correctional facilities, hospitals, child advocacy centers and higher education.
“House and Senate Republicans and Democrats worked together to pass this supplemental budget plan to resolve the governor’s $6 billion veto that hurt our students, family farms, correctional officers and many other vital programs and services,” Delozier said. “While the governor tries to claim the math doesn’t add up, the reality is we used his revenue estimates and his funding requests to create it. His claims are simply untrue and do not help schools and businesses that are on the verge of shutting their doors.”
Despite calls from Pennsylvanians to finish the 2015-16 budget, Wolf vowed to veto the Legislature’s latest budget plan.
“My constituents have not suddenly changed their minds and decided they want Gov. Wolf’s tax hikes,” Delozier said. “For the governor to continue to hold hostages in hopes that closed schools and furloughed employees will change their minds is ridiculous and irresponsible. While he says he will ‘stand up against’ this budget, my question is who is he standing up for? Is he standing up for the schools that are going to close, the businesses that are laying off employees, the health care centers that are cutting services or the taxpayers who can’t afford more cuts to their paychecks? The governor needs to realize the only person he is standing up for by vetoing this budget is himself. We have to move on.”
