HARRISBURG – Rep. Craig Staats (R-Bucks) issued the following statement following Gov. Tom Wolf’s 2016-17 budget address:
“The governor’s budget address this morning was bizarre and unproductive. I found it troubling that Gov. Wolf did not talk about any details of his budget proposal in his address. He instead lectured the Legislature and used political attacks to further polarize an already contentious environment.
“Today, Gov. Wolf proposed a $2.7 billion tax increase, which includes an increase in the Personal Income Tax and an expansion in the Sales and Use Tax. I cannot support this proposal because I was not sent to Harrisburg to raise taxes. Further, as a legislator with extensive business experience, I am confused by Gov. Wolf’s approach of addressing the structural deficit by proposing billions in new spending.
“I will continue to stand up for the taxpayers and oppose broad-based tax increases. Working families, seniors and small businesses simply cannot afford higher taxes. We are in touch with the people of Pennsylvania, and it is time for Gov. Wolf to join us.”
