HARRISBURG – Rep. Paul Schemel (R-Franklin) today joined a majority of his colleagues in supporting a responsible spending plan that would end the five-month-old state budget impasse.
House Bill 1460 spends $30.26 billion, which is $1 billion more than the last fiscal year, and does not include a broad-based tax increase. Most notably, the plan calls for an historic level of spending on education in the amount of $10.7 billion, including a $100 million increase for K-12 education.
Schemel issued the following statement regarding the proposal:
“It is December 8 and Pennsylvania is still without a budget because both Republicans and Democrats are far apart on our respective visions for Pennsylvania. It’s time to do something, or we will soon face a crisis. This budget plan is a “no losers, no winners” effort to break the stalemate. It funds the essential services of government while setting aside, for now, the controversial issues on which the Legislature and governor cannot agree.”
House Bill 1460 will next be considered by the Senate.
