HARRISBURG – Rep. Kerry Benninghoff (R-Centre/Mifflin) announced today that his legislation to protect the privacy of jurors passed the House with unanimous, bi-partisan support.
“Many jurors preside over high-profile cases, and they have the right to be protected,” Benninghoff said.
House Bill 1626 would exempt the names and addresses of jurors from public access, unless otherwise ordered by the courts. Under Benninghoff’s proposal, government agencies that maintain juror records would not be permitted to release any identifying information to the public.
The legislation does not preclude individual jurors from releasing such information voluntarily.
“I believe it is our duty to ensure the safety of citizens as they fulfill their civic duty,” Benninghoff said. “I thank my colleagues in the House for supporting this important piece of legislation.”
The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration.
