Jun. 20, 2018

HARRISBURG – Rep. Tim O’Neal (R-Washington) today issued the following statement in response to House passage of a $32.7 billion Fiscal Year 2018-19 budget:

“While I have only been in office for a few weeks, I’m pleased to support a state budget that stands up for taxpayers and contains no new taxes. The plan also increases spending by only 1.7 percent over the current fiscal year. This is well below the 2.13 national yearly change in inflation.

“As a parent of two young children, safety is a priority. This budget creates a new $60 million school safety block grant program for which our schools can apply to upgrade their security. Funding can cover items such as school resource officers, metal detectors, school safety assessments and preplanning, and other facility upgrades. I encourage all school districts to apply.

“We also were able to increase funding for K-12 schools and institutions of higher learning, while devoting an additional $30 million for career and technical education. Pathways for all students need to be supported so young people can pursue their dreams no matter the career. I look forward to working with my colleagues to create and protect jobs, improve infrastructure and reform state government.”

School districts within the 48th District will receive the following amounts:

• Canon-McMillan – $20.95 million, a 3.3 percent increase.
• Chartiers-Houston – $7.23 million, a 2.6 percent increase.
• Trinity Area – $19.56 million, a 3.1 percent increase.
• Washington – $13.51 million, a 3.1 percent increase.

The 48th Legislative District in Washington County includes the city of Washington; Chartiers, North Franklin, North Strabane and South Strabane townships; and Canonsburg, East Washington and Houston boroughs.
