HARRISBURG – Legislation to forever acknowledge and remember the sacrifice of a local hero killed in action was passed Monday in the House, said Rep. Sheryl Delozier (R-Cumberland), author of the proposal.
House Bill 1317 would designate a bridge on a portion of U.S. Route 15, over Route 114, as the “Corporal Jonathan Dean Faircloth Memorial Bridge.”
Faircloth, who graduated from Mechanicsburg Area High School in 2006, joined the U.S. Marine Corps after high school, and served tours of duty in both Iraq and Afghanistan during his five-year military career.
“Jonathan was a very special young man who served his country and his community with honor and distinction,” Delozier said. “It is only fitting a portion of Route 15 bear his name, so that people in the community are reminded of his service and sacrifice each time they pass through this area.”
Faircloth served as an aerial observer and aircraft mechanic with the Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 363, Marine Air Group 24. He was killed in a Sea Stallion helicopter crash during a training exercise off the coast of Hawaii in March 2011. Faircloth was awarded four Air Medals as well as two Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medals, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Following his enlistment, he had plans to enroll in college to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering.
If House Bill 1317 is approved by the Senate and governor, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will post signs along the Route 15 displaying the new name.
