Responsible budget eliminates deficit, provides new funding for school safety
and does not raise taxes
|
HARRISBURG – Rep. Kerry Benninghoff (R-Centre/Mifflin) issued the following statement on the state spending plan approved today by the House of Representatives, which passed before the June 30 deadline with bipartisan support.
“Several years ago, we were told that higher taxes were the only way out of a $2 billion hole, but I know that people work hard for their money, and I didn’t think they should have to send more of it to Harrisburg.
“Government should operate no differently than we all do as we manage our households; putting money where it’s needed most, cutting out unnecessary costs and responsibly planning for the future. Instead of raising taxes, for the last three years, that is exactly what we did, and this budget is the result.”
The House-passed budget increases spending well below the rate of inflation; erases the state deficit; invests more money than ever before in higher ed, preK-12 and career and technical education; and creates a new, $60 million block grant for school safety. Due to several years of prudent planning and fiscal restraint, the budget doesn't raise any taxes or fees, and puts money into the state’s savings account for the first time in more than a decade.
