HARRISBURG – Rep. Kerry Benninghoff (R-Centre/Mifflin) today voted against a 16 percent tax hike on working people and small businesses, and called for Gov. Tom Wolf and legislators in Harrisburg to get serious about ending the impasse with real, responsible solutions that reduce the cost of government.
Benninghoff issued this statement following the vote:
“The plan brought before the House today attempted to balance the state budget on the backs of the working people, yet did nothing to address the state’s crippling pension crisis, encourage job growth or get the state on proper financial footing. It is not a responsible path forward for Pennsylvania.
“Now approaching 100 days without a budget, and after more than three votes to provide critical funding to our schools and most vulnerable citizens, the governor needs to face the reality that middle-class Pennsylvanians and small businesses cannot afford to send more of their hard-earned dollars to Harrisburg.
“I cannot, and will not, ask the working people of my district to take a pay cut in order to send 31.4 percent of all new education funding to Philadelphia. The votes for such a plan do not exist.
“It is time to move beyond this politically motivated impasse, and find real solutions. Until we do, counties, local governments, schools and social service providers will continue to face significant and unacceptable impacts. They have waited long enough.”
