HARRISBURG – State Rep. Mark Gillen (R-Berks/Lancaster) today in Harrisburg voted against a bill considered and rejected by the state House that would have increased the state Personal Income Tax by 16 percent without eliminating school district property taxes for most Pennsylvanians.
The proposal was unveiled Tuesday by the governor and considered by the House in an effort to advance state budget negotiations.
“These tax proposals would further burden our working families without eliminating property taxes,” Gillen said. “We can meet our responsibilities to education, infrastructure and human services without raising income taxes on Pennsylvanians.”
Gov. Tom Wolf would like a broad-based tax increase to pay for additional state spending.
The state House and Senate in June approved a balanced, on-time state budget that included no new or increased taxes. Wolf vetoed it, triggering the months-long budget gridlock that has ensued.
Gillen hopes today’s vote will move forward the budget negotiation process.
“I’m going to continue working to adopt a balanced, responsible state budget,” Gillen said.
