HARRISBURG – Legislation sponsored by Rep. Mark Keller (R-Perry/Cumberland), which would provide civil immunity to veterinarians when they report a case of animal cruelty, today was unanimously approved by the House of Representatives.
House Bill 760 will next be considered by the Senate.
“Veterinarians are required to protect the privacy of their clients, unless it becomes necessary to protect the health and welfare of an individual, the animal or others,” said Keller. “While most vets recognize they have a responsibility to ensure an animal’s well-being, there are concerns within the profession that such reporting, or lack thereof, leaves them susceptible to legal action. My bill would provide them with legal protections when it is necessary to report any incidents of suspected animal cruelty.”
Also covered under the legislation are veterinarian technicians and assistants. To date, 20 states have adopted similar measures.
