HARRISBURG – As a way to posthumously honor Fayetteville Fire Chief James Cutchall, Rep. Rob Kauffman (R-Franklin) has authored legislation, unanimously approved by the House of Representatives this week, to designate a portion of State Route 1008 in Fayetteville, Franklin County, as the James C. Cutchall Memorial Highway.
James Cutchall was a Fayetteville fire chief who was tragically shot and killed on July 2, 1977, when he arrived at the scene of a blaze. The fire was purposefully started by his killer who then ambushed the responding firefighters, killing Cutchall.

“Cutchall, only 33 years old at the time of his death, was widely regarded as one of the most outstanding fire chiefs in the nation,” said Kauffman. “He died a hero in the course of carrying out his duty to save life and property as a firefighter. His passion and commitment to his activities as a firefighter are remembered by all those who knew him, and this highway dedication will help ensure all those who travel Route 1008 will also know about this local hero.”
Kauffman noted that as Cutchall mentored young firefighters, he could often be heard saying, “To be a volunteer firefighter and make an error is human. To be a volunteer firefighter and worry about those errors is compassion. To be a volunteer firefighter and do something about those errors is professionalism.”
House Bill 1342 now goes to the Senate for consideration. Once the legislation is approved by the Senate and signed into law, signs displaying the new name of the highway will be erected and maintained by PennDOT.
