HARRISBURG – The House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee, led by Majority Chairman Rep. Steve Barrar (R-Chester/Delaware), unanimously approved a resolution to urge Congress and the Department of Defense to expeditiously address the safety and protection of United States Armed Forces personnel within the borders of the United States.
“The tragic deaths of military personnel at two military installations in Tennessee in July highlighted the danger that gun-free military zones present,” Barrar said. “Dynamic threats exist at every turn, and our servicemen and women need to be able to protect themselves while doing their jobs.”
As
House Resolution 437 has passed the committee with bipartisan support, it now goes to the full House for consideration.
The committee also discussed how recruiting centers could be protected more immediately. Members considered the option of stationing state police troopers or Pennsylvania National Guardsmen at the centers.
“I would whole-heartedly support defending our recruiting centers,” Barrar said. “Safety and protection of those who defend our country is one of my paramount concerns.”
