HARRISBURG – Rep. Lee James (R-Venango/Butler) issued the following statement regarding the House passage of the 2022-23 state budget:
“I am pleased to report that this budget invests in the needs of today and tomorrow, all while avoiding any new taxes and fees. Not only did we commit historic funding to our education, but we also deposited $2.1 billion into the Rainy Day Fund, bringing the total to a historic $5 billion, as well as preserve $3.6 billion in the General Fund for future budgets.
“In order for our Commonwealth to be successful, it begins in the classroom. Children are our future, and it’s crucial to protect them at all costs. It’s our job to make sure we provide them with the necessary tools to receive a safe and quality education, no matter if it is at a public, private or charter school.
“This budget includes an increase of $525 million to basic education, bringing the total to $7.08 billion. It also sets aside $405 million, a 45% increase, for the Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC) so kids have optional educational opportunities. It also addresses school safety and security; mental health; charter school regulations; early childhood education; special education; and low-performing schools, among others.
“In addition, the budget supports the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) system redesign by allocating $125 million in federal relief funds to help integration efforts, as well as a $75 million increase, or 15.7%, in General Fund support.
“Every child’s life and right to education matters. I’m pleased we were able to pass a budget that puts a big emphasis on getting students back to the classroom. This budget will put them in a terrific position to flourish.”
