HARRISBURG – With the Pennsylvania Supreme Court hearing oral arguments in a case that will partially determine the fate of Pennsylvania’s entry into the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), a plan that will raise taxes on Pennsylvanians for turning their lights on and heating and cooling their homes, and devastate Pennsylvania’s growing energy economy, Pennsylvania House Republican Leader Bryan Cutler (R-Lancaster) called on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to follow the law and continue the delay placed on Pennsylvania’s entry into RGGI by the Commonwealth Court while underlying legal merits are argued.
“Democrats at all levels of government, and now across two administrations, have conspired to ignore Pennsylvania law and put Pennsylvania into this multi-state compact that will do nothing but raise energy prices on Pennsylvania’s families and crush family-sustaining energy sector jobs,” Cutler said.
“As the Pennsylvania Supreme Court hears oral arguments in a case today that will decide whether our entrance into RGGI can proceed while serious legal questions—including whether a governor can unilaterally place a tax on Pennsylvanians—are being determined, I encourage the court to follow the law and continue to pause our entry into the RGGI program,” continued Cutler.
In July 2022, Pennsylvania’s Commonwealth Court enjoined Pennsylvania’s entry into RGGI while underlying legal merits are being argued at that court. Wednesday’s oral arguments are part of an appeal of that ruling that could fast track Pennsylvania’s entry into RGGI’s energy tax scheme while that case proceeds.
“Pennsylvania Republicans absolutely believe we need to move Pennsylvania forward with a thriving economy and more affordable living, both of which require us to invest in the growth of our home-grown energy industry,” Cutler stated. “Democrat-driven policies like RGGI that destroy jobs and increase costs on Pennsylvanians will only set the Commonwealth back in our competitive advantage as we continue to lose out on opportunities being offered to other states.”
