HARRISBURG -- Rep. Mike Regan (R-York/Cumberland) authored legislation that would, if enacted, prevent those people convicted of drug distribution crimes from receiving Pennsylvania welfare benefits, was approved by the House Health Committee this week.
“During my time in federal law enforcement, many individuals were arrested for drug trafficking crimes, found to have large sums of money and were receiving welfare benefits,” said Regan. “This is unfair to our residents who are in true need of assistance. This legislation should aid in preventing benefits from falling into the wrong hands.”
Regan said House Bill 222 is another component in the continuing effort to curb waste, fraud and abuse in the welfare system. The bill was introduced in the 2013-14 session as House Bill 2413, but did not get a committee vote prior to the end of the session.
“I am pleased that this legislation has received a full discussion and vote in the House Health Committee,” said Regan. “This bill has bipartisan support, and I look forward to a debate and vote by the full House.”
The bill goes to the House floor for consideration.
