HARRISBURG – Rep. Mauree Gingrich (R-Lebanon) co-sponsored legislation that passed today in the House to reduce the size of the state Legislature.
House Bill 153 seeks to amend the Pennsylvania Constitution to reduce the number of seats in the House from 203 to 151 following the 2020 reapportionment. A constitutional amendment requires identical legislation to be passed by both the House and Senate in two consecutive legislative sessions before the matter can go to the voters in a statewide referendum. Last session, the measure passed in the House by a 2-1 margin, but failed to make it through the Senate.
“The time is right for this legislation. Improvements in technology have made it easier - and less expensive – for lawmakers to communicate and interact with their constituents,” said Gingrich. “Only nine states have full-time legislatures and Pennsylvania is by far the largest. I support House Bill 153 because it lets the people of Pennsylvania decide how big they want their government to be.”
The measure is now on its way to the Senate for consideration.
