HARRISBURG – The House today voted to advance Rep. Jason Ortitay’s (R-Washington/Allegheny) legislation to increase awareness of eating disorders in children.

“About 9% of Pennsylvanians will have an eating disorder in their lifetime,” Ortitay said. “Due to social media, body dissatisfaction and eating disorders are growing in teens. Now is the time to act. I’m hopeful the Senate will quickly take up this legislation to raise awareness so that parents are better informed of the warning signs, risk factors and resources available.”

House Bill 190 would require schools to annually provide parents of students in grades six through 12 with educational information regarding eating disorders through email, first-class mail or the school district’s website.

The bill now goes to the Senate for its consideration.

The 46th Legislative District includes South Fayette Township and McDonald and Oakdale boroughs in Allegheny County. It also encompasses Cecil, Chartiers, Mt. Pleasant and North Strabane (Districts 6,7,8 and 9) townships and Canonsburg, Houston and McDonald boroughs in Washington County.
