HARRISBURG – Rep. Charity Grimm Krupa (R-Fayette) issued this statement following the failure of the General Assembly to pass the state budget before June 30:
“Pennsylvania doesn’t have a revenue problem—we have a leadership problem.
“Yesterday marked the June 30 deadline for the Commonwealth to enact a state budget. That deadline has come and gone without a budget in place, and I wish I could say I’m surprised.
“Gov. Josh Shapiro and the House majority party have had months to produce a responsible, balanced budget, but instead of focusing on fiscal discipline, they’ve wasted precious time chasing headlines and promoting policies that don’t have the support of the people or the law. Chief among them is the push to legalize recreational marijuana, an illegal revenue source they’ve irresponsibly baked into their budget math.
“Worse still, the governor and House Democrats are pushing for a spending plan that would blow through our reserves and drain the state’s Rainy Day Fund, money that’s supposed to be there for true emergencies, not to prop up unsustainable programs or short-term political wins. Responsible families don’t raid their savings for everyday expenses, and neither should state government.
“If the governor had spent a little less time filming TikToks on the taxpayer’s dime and a little more time fulfilling his constitutional duty to lead this state responsibly, maybe we wouldn’t be here right now, scrambling without a budget as the new fiscal year begins.
“The people of Pennsylvania deserve better than flashy videos, gimmick politics and imaginary revenue. They deserve a government that balances its checkbook, honors its constitutional obligations and stays focused on the real issues – roads, schools, public safety and respecting the taxpayer.
“As Thomas Jefferson wisely said, “to preserve our independence, we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt.” Yet here we are, being asked to spend more, save nothing and pretend that borrowed money and phantom marijuana taxes will keep the lights on. That’s not governance. That’s negligence.
“It’s time to get back to the business of governing. Enough of the distractions. Let’s do our job.”
