HARRISBURG—Citing partisan gimmicks and a lack of information, Rep. Lou Schmitt (R-Blair) today voted against House Democrats’ $50.61 billion budget proposal. In the following statement, he explained numerous issues with the proposed spending plan.

“Today, House Democrats set a new and troubling record by amending and quickly passing a $50.61 billion budget bill that would quickly drain the state’s surplus and leave future generations burdened with the consequences. The plan was rushed through the House Appropriations Committee to be voted on only a few hours later. The public deserves better.

“Furthermore, this budget framework does not represent a product negotiated with the Senate. It also lacked a financial sheet to show us the impact the spending plan would have on our constituents. Without having better transparency and knowing all the details, I could not approve this budget.

“Instead of pouring taxpayer dollars into new and expanding programs, House Republicans offered a responsible alternative that was focused on growing Pennsylvania’s economy so that all residents can prosper.

“It’s unfortunate our plan was not considered. Putting more money into the hands of consumers is the best path to real economic growth. Sadly, the budget proposal rushed through today paves the way for higher taxes and long-term fiscal challenges. It is my hope our Republican counterparts in the Senate have better success crafting a realistic, sustainable budget that respects taxpayers.”
