HARRISBURG — Rep. Brad Roae (R-Crawford/Erie) issued the following statement today in response to passage of
House Bill 1788:
“Mass transit agencies need to raise their fares by a dollar. Gov. Josh Shapiro said about a million people ride mass transit a day. By adding a dollar, that would be $365 million more in funding. This legislation provides less than that. People who own and operate their own vehicles are probably paying $5 a day or $10 a day more than they were five years ago for their vehicle, gas, insurance, repairs, etc.
“Actual riders need to pay more. In Philly, SEPTA gets $685 million in state funding, $372 in federal funding and $148 million in local funding but fare paying riders only pay $272 million.
“In Pittsburgh, riders pay 14% of the total costs, and federal, state and local taxpayers pay the other 86% of the costs. It’s time for transit riders to pay their fair share.”
The 6th Legislative District includes the city of Meadville; Beaver, Conneaut, East Fairfield, East Fallowfield, East Mead, Fairfield, Greenwood, Hayfield, North Shenango, Pine, Randolph, Sadsbury, South Shenango, Spring, Summerhill, Summit, Union, Vernon, Wayne, West Fallowfield, West Mead and West Shenango townships; and Cochranton, Conneaut Lake, Conneautville, Linesville and Springboro boroughs in Crawford County and Conneaut, Elk Creek and Springfield townships and Albion and Cranesville boroughs in Erie County.
