HARRISBURG – Rep. Jeremy Shaffer (R-Allegheny) issued the following statement regarding the House passing a negotiated $50.1 billion budget deal.

“This budget, while far from perfect, is a step forward.

“I voted yes on this budget because it reflects the kind of bipartisan cooperation that should be the norm, not the exception.

“It’s unfortunate that it took more than 130 days to arrive at this deal.

“When we let political gridlock get in the way, it’s the people of Pennsylvania who pay the price. From schools and nonprofits forced to wait for critical funding, to families and taxpayers who deserve stability and accountability from their government, we must do better.

“In seven of the past 10 years, the Legislature has failed to pass a budget on time and that’s simply unacceptable.

“With regular budget delays, it’s clear we need structural change in Harrisburg. My ‘Reform for Pennsylvania’ plan is a set of commonsense proposals to bring greater accountability and transparency to state government.

“The plan includes suspending legislative pay raises when the budget is late, enacting term limits, reducing the size of the Legislature, and transitioning to a part-time General Assembly. These reforms are about putting the people of Pennsylvania first and restoring trust in the process.”
