HARRISBURG – Following a vote today that ends a months-long budget impasse, Rep. Torren Ecker (R-Adams/Cumberland) issued the following statement:
“Today, I voted to end a protracted impasse. It is very unfortunate for all Pennsylvanians that it took four months for a budget agreement to be reached. This is a budget that could have, and should have, come together in early summer, not at the brink of Thanksgiving.
“While the $50.1 billion spend number is more than I would have liked, it pales in comparison to the nearly $52 billion the governor had proposed in his spending plan. House and Senate Republicans stood firm and worked jointly with all sides to find meaningful ways to decrease proposed spending, protecting Pennsylvanians from a forthcoming tax hike.
“We were also able to include numerous policy initiatives that will propel Pennsylvania, particularly its economy, forward. The largest of which is withdrawing from RGGI (Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative). RGGI is responsible for the Commonwealth losing out on 22,000 direct energy-related jobs and nearly $8 billion in economic development. Leaving RGGI will also cancel an expected 30% increase to utilities bills, saving residents money. Reforms to permitting will also bolster economic growth and make Pennsylvania more competitive in attracting new businesses. Also in this budget, the Rainy Day Fund will remain untouched, allowing it to grow instead of using it for spending to create new state programs.
“As I prepare to leave office, my vote in favor of this budget is one I can say I am proud to have made. I believe the benefits to all residents will be felt and this budget puts Pennsylvania on better fiscal footing for the years to come.”
